National 5 Applications of Mathematics

This book is a comprehensive resource for teachers and learners of National 5 Applications of Mathematics. It has been designed to follow the SQA course specification and covers every aspect of the National 5 course. Like our other textbooks, the book gives minimal space to short, concise explanations, with worked examples, to allow most of the content to be given over to practice questions.

The book is packed with practice questions for every individual skill. Many of the prerequisite National 4 skills are included and clearly labelled to provide sufficient overlap for all learners. Within the National 5 content, some of the exercises are marked by difficulty level, to build confidence in basic skills as well as to offer challenge and depth.

The book is colour coded according to the units: numeracy, managing finance & statistics and geometry & measure. Each skill is developed individually, allowing learners to work through the book in any order. Every exercise is uniquely numbered, making navigation through the book straightforward.

A new book for the modern classroom

National 5 Applications of Mathematics is designed to provide opportunities for learners to develop mathematical skills required for real-life situations and to be able apply these skills within a variety of contexts. For this reason, the Applications of Mathematics course involves much more reading and interpretation than other mathematics courses.

This book has been written in the original unit order with numeracy skills placed at the beginning and developed skill-by-skill, with lots of National 4 skills included, to allow every learner the opportunity to develop and reinforce these skills before having to apply them.

Like all our books, the teaching content is kept to a minimum, in order to maximise space for practice questions. This provides significant opportunities for learners to grow confident in their basic skills.

Unlike other textbooks, these books keep the reasoning skills and questions in context in a separate section. Learners are encouraged to develop reading skills first, prior to attempting the question. These sections are throughout the book and contain exercises of increasing difficulty.

Alongside the textbook there are many additional online resources, linked via QR code. to complement teaching and learning. These include:

  • Write-on worksheets
  • Questions in context record sheet
  • Printable book pages for certain sections for eBook users
